Reading with Elephant and Piggie

This post is sponsored by Disney-Hyperion.

My girls usually dress themselves.  And, if you follow my insta-stories, you know that Brigie is very particular about her pants and clothes and how they feel.  The end result is that her outfits don't always match or go together very well, but it's sometimes just a victory for her/all of them to be somewhat appropriately dressed for the weather.

This is part of the reason my girls love "It's Shoe Time!", a new title by Bryan Collier. It's part of the Elephant and Piggie Like Reading! series from Mo Willems where Elephant & Piggie introduce readers to new books and authors.  "It's Shoe Time!" features our favorite characters, Elephant and Piggie, reading a book about a little girl who chooses to wear a pair of mismatched shoes.  The shoes all have personalities and protest her choice, until they see her father is also wearing a pair of mismatched shoes, and realize it's actually ok to go against the norm.

I can see the struggle Brigie feels when she wants to wear something fancier or different but it really bothers her, and she just has to wear what works.  It's good for her to know that it's ok if she doesn't match perfectly; after all, it's what is on the inside that counts the most.

Brigie will be 5 next month, and while she can't read yet, she loves this style of book with "word bubbles," as she calls them.  The stories are very memorable and easy for her to grasp, and she loves to quickly memorize the story and read them over and over.  It's especially fun when she can "read" them to her little sister - so these books are really great for early and beginning readers!

I also love how Elephant & Piggie discuss the book at the end. It's such a great introduction to reading comprehension.

Be sure to check out "It's Shoe Time!," available in stores now, and check out this post and this post on some of our other Mo Willems favorites!
